Six Greatest “Geeky Conventions” In Philippines 2016

It has been a fruitful year for me! I have accomplished so many things that are beyond my expectations. I was able to check off most of the items on my bucket list for this year and I am completely satisfied with it. Don’t worry, this is not yet my year-ender post but I just made this special entry to list down six of the greatest conventions I have ever attended this year (cuz I don’t think there will be any “geeky” conventions this coming December).  I know this blog is all about my personal travels and pilgrims but sometimes the geek in me comes out and I can’t help to share my personal geeky adventures.  This year was a great blast because i was able to attend some of the biggest conventions of 2016. So without any further ado, here are my list of six greatest conventions of 2016.
1. ToyConPh 2016 (June 2016)
Among all the geeky conventions in the Philippines, ToyConPH has a very high reputation and is probably considered as the longest running convention in the country.  ToyCon is an annual pop culture event that gathers hard core toy collectors, otakus, video gamers, cosplayers and fans together. ToyCon celebrated their 15th anniversary with a vast of wonderful improvements. This yearly event which started way back in 2002 brought by The Asian Comics, Toys and Hobbies Collective Inc. as a convention exclusively for toy collectors has grown so much and is now recognized by the international industry of toys, comics, movies and anime. This year, they have invited Hollywood stars like Daniel Logan (Boba Fett), Bronson Pelletier and Kiowa Gordon (Twilight Saga), Heffron Drive, and Kristian Nairn (Hodor of GoT). Encantadia cast also made waves as they tease their series reboot. The event also highlights the 25 ft tall statue of Voltes V in celebration of their 40th anniversary.

2. History Con Asia 2016 (August 2016)
History Con 2016 is the first ever convention of its kind. It is done in celebration of all things entertainment with History Channel leading the way. It was actually a very random convention and it has so many things to offer but one thing is clear, the event aimed to break history by making world records.  It has so many things to offer, historically relevant exhibits, Car shows, International celebrity guests, an overwhelming amount of contests and tournaments. The event features celebrities from local and international media. Some of their guests insludes Giorgio Tsoukalos of Ancient Aliens, Ian Matthews, Damon Runyan and whole lot more. One of my personal favorites is the overwhelming amount of antique collections which are all very nostalgic.

3. AsiaPop Comicon 2016 (August 2016)
AsiaPop Comicon 2016 is probably one of the biggest and highly anticipated conventions held in our country this year. The event featured a powerful line of celebrities (local and international), entertainments guests, comic artists, cosplayers and a whole lot more that brought the ultimate fan experience! Some of the guests of this year’s AsiaPop Comicon includes Nicholas Hoult (X-Men, Warm Bodies, Skins and Mad Max) , Millie Bobbie Brown (Stranger Things), Joe Dempsie (Game Of Thrones), and Claire Holt (Vampire Diaries and H2O: Just Add Water). On top of these great celebrities, the event also features some exclusive activities and happenings including the intriguing Hall M which is only restricted to 1000 attendees.

4. Cosplay Mania 2016 (October 2016)
Dubbed as the biggest Cosplay convention in the country. Cosplay Mania 2016 is a two day event and was held at SMX Center in Mall of Asia.Cosmania was the first ever convention I have attended way back in 2012 and since then, I have been patronizing this convention as it brings out the inner geek in me! The event is not just for Cosplayers alone but it also featured an overwhelming amount of booths that are certainly for certified otakus. They had a slight increase with their ticket pricing though which includes the Gold tickets which allows convention goers to watch the concert at 7pm. They have also invited some of internationally acclaimed cosplayers like Kaname, Yukari Shimotsuki, Tomia, Rumi and more. Of course, one of the highlights here are the cosplay competition.

5. Blogapalooza Horizon 2.0 (Novemeber 2016)
Blogapalooza is a huge blogging convention that gathers an overwhelming amount of social media influenser and bloggers and businesses together. Blogapalooza is a Business to blogger networking and marketing event. This event allows the businesses/ brands to present and promote their products to bloggers and social media influencers. This event could also be a perfect way for the two (Business and Bloggers) to collaborate with each other for their own benefits. This year was a big blast for Blogapalooza. They didn’t just manage to invite various blogger community outside Manila but they also had a very successful launch of the country’s first ever influencer marketing platform, the country’s first ever influencer marketing platform, the Buzzin.

6. Komikon 2016 (November 2016)
Komikon is an annual comics convention in the Philippines and what really makes it even more interesting is the fact that this convention promotes our very own comics artists and their marvelous mastepiece. Too bad I wasn’t able to attend this year’s Komikon 2016 and I keep myself updated through their official Facebook Page. Some of the highlights includes the newly launched Pedro Penduko comic series inspired from the original Francisco Coching, Zuma by Hal Santiago, Lingon by Mel Casipit and more. Another interesting highlights is the exhibit od reinterpreted artworks of Mars Ravelo in celebration of the artists’ 100th Anniversary.

IMG_0425trFinally, here comes the last part of my ToyConPh2016 experience. We’re done with the main stage events and also with the most exciting booths! Now, I will share you some of the most interesting toys featured in the event and so as the CosFanX Cosplay Contest. This post also includes random cosplayers who attended the event and so as those life-size and huge Funko Pop Statues.

IMG_0125tAs soon as you enter the SMX Convention center, one of the exhibits that will welcome you are these huge collection of LEGO toys brought by PHLUG (Philippine Lego User Group). The Philippine Lego User Group was founded on December 12, 2012 and was the first Lego User Group to be officially recognized in the country.
IMG_0127tConsidering how detailed each piece is, you’ll wonder how much time and effort these lego users inputted just to end up with such masterpiece!IMG_0148tJust look at these very detailed “Pinoylug Stadium”! Can you guess how many characters there are in this miniature stage? The stadium is filled with some of your favorite characters from Batman to Micky Mouse! 20160612_104444tHow about this min Lego version of the Palace of Westminster in UK?

NBA Action FiguresIMG_0133tAnother eye-catching collection of toys that will surely take your attention upon entering the SMX center are the NBA Stars action figure. These are well detailed action figures showcasing your favorite NBA Stars. Here’s Michael Jordan on his Formal wear. 17 Most Exciting Booths From ToyConPh2016

AAASSSAAAside from the main stage events that feature performances and live interview from different celebrities and personalities , one of the most entertaining highlights of the ToyConPH2016 are the exhibitors booth. These exhibits are the main reason why people and hardcore toy collectors are patronizing the event. This event allows brands to showcase the best of their products. This year, the event has so much to offer. I really had a blast and now, allow me to list down some of the most exciting and most interesting booths from the recently held Toy convention.

  1. Harley Quinn’s Tattoo Parlor

IMG_0172tYou might have heard the buzz about those badass Suicide Squad-tattoo-themed posters released by their official Twitter account recently. As part of their marketing plan, they even built a real life tattoo parlor dedicated to one of the Suicide Squad members no other than Harley Quinn. Interestingly, ToyCon created the same theme! IMG_0170tThe booth is giving free water based tattoo similar to the Suicide Squad designs they released on Twitter. How cool it is to walk down the convention wearing any of those badass-looking tattoo right? Too bad I didn’t get a chance to have it since the queue was too long and I am wearing long sleeve hoodie that time! ZZZZZZZZZLocated beside the Harley Quinn’s Tattoo Parlor is the life-sized standees of the so-called “worst heroes ever” – the Suicide Squad. The movie is about to hit the theaters this coming August 4 and I’m pretty sure that it is going to be a big hit!

2. Gaming Library
ZZZZZZZWhile most kids today are so engaged with their gadgets (smartphones, tablets and more), Gaming Library booth will show them that there are more interesting things we can play with other than those video games and mobile game apps.  The aim of this very interesting booth is not just to showcase their new table top games but also to revitalize the boardgames in the Philippines. I do believe that it is really about time to bring boardgames back to their former glory.ZZZZZZZZZzaThe booth provide enough space for interested gamers to play boardgames for free. They introduced various card games inspired from different fantasy series like Game of Thrones and other related shows. Their magazine (distributed to every ToyCon goers) also noted that the future of Boardgames in the Philippines is bright considering we now have many boardgame Cafes that brings boardgame playing to an all new level of entertainment.

3. Microcosmic Arts and Crafts (M.A.C)XXXXXXXXThis exhibitor is only occupying a very small space but it doesn’t really matter at all because the product they are showcasing are also miniature. MAC is a company founded by Engr. Jose Israel B, Resurreccion which mainly caters items like miniature terrains and figurines that are mostly inspired from Medieval era. These items are very suitable for tabletop wargaming and dioramas. zzzzzzzzI was really fascinated by their works and I find all those intricate details very impressive. It somehow reminds me of Ragnarok game at some point! The inner kid in me suddenly pops out and I imagined myself playing with these cute figurines like what I used to do when I was a kiddo.
zzzzzzzI wonder how much time it will cost just to make one of these houses.  For those who are wondering, most of the items here are cast from Epoxy Resin.
zzzzzzzzWow, just look at the details! If I can only shrink like Ant-Man, i would love to spend time exploring this place as if you are taken to another dimension or something haha. ZZZZZZZThe price for each piece will vary depending on the size and whether you want to avail those only with primer coating or already painted. The price ranges from Php300 to Php4000 except for the minuature props and creatures which can be availaed for as low as Php50 (feel free to check their site here http://www.microcosmicartsandcrafts.com/)

4. This Booth by “Zaldy”zzzzzzzzI am actually not aware of the shop’s name or it’s probably just a private vintage toy collector. I asked one of their attendants and she told me that their booth is “186-187”. At first I thought, it was an odd name for a shop until I realized that she was just referring to the number of the booth slots they occupied. I later learned that the booth is registered under the name of “Zaldy” but I cannot find any related details to them.ZZZZZZZWhat I really love about this booth is that it offers so much nostalgia that brings so much of my childhood memory. The booth features old school game consoles which are still functioning including a Nintendo 64, PlayStation 1 , Nintendo Super Family Computer and more.ZZZZZZZZJust look at these old yet still in good condition ROM Cartridges!

My First ToyCon Experience #ToyConPh2016

IMG_0228tyAfter many failed attempts from the previous conventions, I finally made it this year! ToyCon is an annual pop culture event here in the Philippines that gathers hard core toy collectors, otakus, video gamers, cosplayers and fans together. So basically, ToyConPh is a convention that will surely bring out your inner geek at its best! This year, ToyCon celebrated their 15th anniversary with a vast of wonderful improvements. This yearly event which started way back in 2002 brought by The Asian Comics, Toys and Hobbies Collective Inc. as a convention exclusively for toy collectors has grown so much and is now recognized by the international industry of toys, comics, movies and anime.
IMG_0131tInterestingly, this year’s convention is dubbed as ToyCon Philippines 2016 + Pop Life FanXperience. The Asian Comics, Toys and Hobbies Collective Inc has partnered with FanXperience to deliver the best pop culture in Asia, focusing on timing and relevance. Much like their previous conventions, the event will still showcase a huge collection all types of comics, toys, movies, animation, games and special memorabilia (either for sale or for exhibit purposes). What really makes ToyConPh2016 more special is the fact that they will now feature celebrity attendees for die hard fans of both local and international personalities.

Suicide Squad Booth

With Php500 for a day pass, I must say that the admission fee is quite expensive compare to other popular conventions here in the Philippines (Cosmania, OzineFest, Nexcon to name a few). By hey, isn’t the same amount we paid for the recently held  Asia Pop Comic Con (APCC)? After all, ToyCon provided the same amount of experience and the line up of celebrities and exhibitors they had this year wasn’t really that bad either! Stan Lee’s Excelsior Exhibition? Hodor from GOT? Dean Cain? The New Encantadia casts? Come on, it’s undeniably a great list of celebrities!IMG_0227tOne of the most interesting highlights of the event is this 25ft tall replica of the iconic Voltes V robot! This is done in celebration of its 40th Anniversary here in the Philippines. The anime was first shown in national television in 1970 (the time of Martial Law) and this anime have left a huge impact and has become a household name since then. Limited edition Voltes V toys from Mindstyle and Toei Company were presented in the event too.IMG_0282tThe event also invited an award winning USA Face & Body Artist, Sammie Bartko who provided free zombie-like makeover in her zombie and alien – inspired booth which also aptly features the works of Arthur Suydam, a well known graphic artists known for his work on Marvel Zombies and The Walking Dead.IMG_0312tA ToyCon will not be a ToyCon without…. TOYS of course and the event features an overwhelming amount of toy collections! Some are for display purposes while most of them are greatly for sale which you can buy in size great discounts! This image above is a well-detailed collection of scaled Storm troopers and the exhibitor was actually challenging the event goers to guess the accurate amount of Storm Troopers on display and whoever guess it right will win a prize in return. (I will post a separate entry for Toys at ToyConPh soon). IMG_0326tJapan-based Girl group named “Electric Ribbon” gracing the Satellite stage! It’s so nice of them to interact with the audience despite of having a hard time to communicate.  They were very fun and witty though! This particular event is part of the so-called Tokyo Underground Experience brought by Pop Asia and Secret Base. They are accompanied by other groups like Yanakiku duo and Sony Music’s DJ Kazu.
