Six Greatest “Geeky Conventions” In Philippines 2016

It has been a fruitful year for me! I have accomplished so many things that are beyond my expectations. I was able to check off most of the items on my bucket list for this year and I am completely satisfied with it. Don’t worry, this is not yet my year-ender post but I just made this special entry to list down six of the greatest conventions I have ever attended this year (cuz I don’t think there will be any “geeky” conventions this coming December).  I know this blog is all about my personal travels and pilgrims but sometimes the geek in me comes out and I can’t help to share my personal geeky adventures.  This year was a great blast because i was able to attend some of the biggest conventions of 2016. So without any further ado, here are my list of six greatest conventions of 2016.

1. ToyConPh 2016 (June 2016)
Among all the geeky conventions in the Philippines, ToyConPH has a very high reputation and is probably considered as the longest running convention in the country.  ToyCon is an annual pop culture event that gathers hard core toy collectors, otakus, video gamers, cosplayers and fans together. ToyCon celebrated their 15th anniversary with a vast of wonderful improvements. This yearly event which started way back in 2002 brought by The Asian Comics, Toys and Hobbies Collective Inc. as a convention exclusively for toy collectors has grown so much and is now recognized by the international industry of toys, comics, movies and anime. This year, they have invited Hollywood stars like Daniel Logan (Boba Fett), Bronson Pelletier and Kiowa Gordon (Twilight Saga), Heffron Drive, and Kristian Nairn (Hodor of GoT). Encantadia cast also made waves as they tease their series reboot. The event also highlights the 25 ft tall statue of Voltes V in celebration of their 40th anniversary.

2. History Con Asia 2016 (August 2016)
History Con 2016 is the first ever convention of its kind. It is done in celebration of all things entertainment with History Channel leading the way. It was actually a very random convention and it has so many things to offer but one thing is clear, the event aimed to break history by making world records.  It has so many things to offer, historically relevant exhibits, Car shows, International celebrity guests, an overwhelming amount of contests and tournaments. The event features celebrities from local and international media. Some of their guests insludes Giorgio Tsoukalos of Ancient Aliens, Ian Matthews, Damon Runyan and whole lot more. One of my personal favorites is the overwhelming amount of antique collections which are all very nostalgic.

3. AsiaPop Comicon 2016 (August 2016)
AsiaPop Comicon 2016 is probably one of the biggest and highly anticipated conventions held in our country this year. The event featured a powerful line of celebrities (local and international), entertainments guests, comic artists, cosplayers and a whole lot more that brought the ultimate fan experience! Some of the guests of this year’s AsiaPop Comicon includes Nicholas Hoult (X-Men, Warm Bodies, Skins and Mad Max) , Millie Bobbie Brown (Stranger Things), Joe Dempsie (Game Of Thrones), and Claire Holt (Vampire Diaries and H2O: Just Add Water). On top of these great celebrities, the event also features some exclusive activities and happenings including the intriguing Hall M which is only restricted to 1000 attendees.

4. Cosplay Mania 2016 (October 2016)
Dubbed as the biggest Cosplay convention in the country. Cosplay Mania 2016 is a two day event and was held at SMX Center in Mall of Asia.Cosmania was the first ever convention I have attended way back in 2012 and since then, I have been patronizing this convention as it brings out the inner geek in me! The event is not just for Cosplayers alone but it also featured an overwhelming amount of booths that are certainly for certified otakus. They had a slight increase with their ticket pricing though which includes the Gold tickets which allows convention goers to watch the concert at 7pm. They have also invited some of internationally acclaimed cosplayers like Kaname, Yukari Shimotsuki, Tomia, Rumi and more. Of course, one of the highlights here are the cosplay competition.

Blogapalooza is a huge blogging convention that gathers an overwhelming amount of social media influenser and bloggers and businesses together. Blogapalooza is a Business to blogger networking and marketing event. This event allows the businesses/ brands to present and promote their products to bloggers and social media influencers. This event could also be a perfect way for the two (Business and Bloggers) to collaborate with each other for their own benefits. This year was a big blast for Blogapalooza. They didn’t just manage to invite various blogger community outside Manila but they also had a very successful launch of the country’s first ever influencer marketing platform, the country’s first ever influencer marketing platform, the Buzzin.

6. Komikon 2016 (November 2016)
Komikon is an annual comics convention in the Philippines and what really makes it even more interesting is the fact that this convention promotes our very own comics artists and their marvelous mastepiece. Too bad I wasn’t able to attend this year’s Komikon 2016 and I keep myself updated through their official Facebook Page. Some of the highlights includes the newly launched Pedro Penduko comic series inspired from the original Francisco Coching, Zuma by Hal Santiago, Lingon by Mel Casipit and more. Another interesting highlights is the exhibit od reinterpreted artworks of Mars Ravelo in celebration of the artists’ 100th Anniversary.

Exciting Booths, Activities And Happenings From History Con Asia 2016

We’re back at the History Con 2016. We’re done featuring the event’s extensive car collections and now allow me to feature some of the exciting exhibit booths, activities and happenings from the recently held History Con 2016.  As what the title of the event suggests, it is all about History and we are not just referring to History Channel shows alone. The event will take you back in time as it features some interesting items that will bring so much nostalgia. Apart from that, the event also tried to break three world records too! History making indeed!
IMG_0759tDay Passers will receive this notebook and a lanyard for free! I actually thought that the tickets are only purchasable online, thus only credit card owners can avail them. Luckily a friend of mine who attended the first day informed me that there are ticket booths outside selling tickets!IMG_0760tThe History Channel Logo Standee welcomes all the visitors!

1. Geisha Blade Booth

IMG_0833tOne of the most interesting booths from this event is the Geisha Blade booths and that is for one main thing, the SWORDS! The Ninja guy inside me freaks out after witnessing those authentic swords upclose! Geisha Blade is the pioneer shop here in the Philippines that caters Japanese style swords (Samurai) and samurai armors (Yoroi). IMG_0829tA Cosplayer giving out his killer stance while holding a real Japanese samuraiIMG_0823tA sword with gold plated hilt with intricate detailing!IMG_0825tA short sword with ancient scriptures on it. (Not sure what it’s called though)IMG_0826tJapanese Samurai swords in display. They got different styles and lengths too. IMG_0827tHow about this sword with porcelain hilt?

2. Vikings Booth
IMG_0838tVikings is an Irish-Canadian historical drama television series for History Channel and was recently renewed for another season. Vikings is inspired by the sagas of Viking Ragnar Lothbrok, one of the best-known legendary Norse heroes and notorious as the scourge of England and France. The show portrays Ragnar as a farmer who rises to fame by successful raids into England, and eventually becomes a Scandinavian king. The booth features a mini Viking ship where visitors can take photos.

3. Segway Booth
IMG_0816tSegway may not take you back in time but it will bring you the future! Segway was brought here in the Philippines in 2011 and now they are promoting their new line of items including the newest generations of vehicles such as NineBot One, the Ninebot Mini Personal Transportation Robot, Ninebot Elite, Segway X2 and more. IMG_0818tThey also demonstrated each of their vehicles during the event!

4. Victoria BambikeIMG_0843tI find this bicycles really interesting and something that we Pinoy should be very proud of! Victoria Bambike is a bike that features frame that is made from Bamboos. Victoria is named after the town of Victoria, Tarlac, where the Gawad Kalinga Bambuilders live. IMG_0846tVictoria Bambike currently partnered with Gawad Kalinga and you’ve probably know them for their Bambike EcoTours in Intramuros!

5. CCA Manila BoothIMG_0855tWhat would you expect from Center of Culinary Arts? Of course, they will showcase some of their special dishes. The picture above is an entree dish called Triumph of ZeusIMG_0856tThey feature three set of meal which they aptly called “Mount Olympus” because the names are merely inspired from Greek Mythology. This Seafood dish is called “Valor of Poseidon”IMG_0857tThis Soup is called the “Absolution of Hades”. CCA chef Bruno Tirel graced the main stage to taught us all how to properly make Steaks and how to garnish it to make it look more appetizing. It was really fun to watch this witty chef and I actually learned a lot from him!

6.  Different Merchandises and Other Photobooths

Insane Car Collections At History Con 2016

Live History, Feel History, See History! The first and absolutely one of a kind convention was recently held here in Manila. History Channel Asia just had their very first History Convention and we are very lucky that they have chosen Philippines as their venue! It is basically a four day event (held from August 25-28) which features exciting exhibits , interactive experiences, on ground activities, contests and of course, special celebrities from History channel including Giorgio Tsoukalos of Ancient Aliens.
IMG_0760t
History Con is not just about History Channel alone, they are really aiming to make history as they tried to break three world records including the longest tv marathon and the largest serving of mushroom dish. Over 50,000 people attended the said convention and considering that it was their first in the country, the amount of attendees are truly overwhelming.

One of the greatest highlights of the events are the huge collection of cars and vehicles on display. I think the exhibit of cars were done to promote one of their new shows, the Celebrity Car Wars, a reality series that features a great ensemble of celebrities and expert racers including Bobby Tonelli, Allan Wu, Andrea Fonseka, Joey Mead King, KC Montero, Marc Nelson, Piyawak Kempetch, Michele Bumgarner, Gaby Dela Merced and Alex Yoong. In fact, these cars occupied most of the exhibitors area and so I decided to put them all in a separate entry.

It is very interesting to note that my online job is about cars so even though I don’t know how to drive, I am somehow exposed in such matter. The first thing that took my attention are these muscle cars! It’s very rare to see American Muscle cars here in our country so these cars truly blown my mind!
IMG_0765tThese classic cars were brought by Classic Speed Restorations. They are specializing restoration of 1960s classic cars.

IMG_0776tThis custom built Piaggo Ape D600 is quite eye catching too!IMG_0777tHow about this sharp-looking Toyota Land Cruiser from Atoy CustomsIMG_0780tALS Marine also showcased some of their new vehicles! A Quick Glimpse To History Con 2016

History Channel is going to make History and we are so lucky that they have chosen our country to make these record breaking events in History.  History Con 2016 is the first ever convention of its kind. It is done in celebration of all things entertainment with History Channel leading the way.  The convention is actually very random and it is more than just the history. It has so many things to offer, historically relevant exhibits, Car shows, International celebrity guests, an overwhelming amount of contests and tournaments and a whole lot more! It’s a four day event that kicked off last August25 and will run until today August 28, 2016. You can still catch up today (tickets are also being sold on the event site and each pass came up with interesting freebies too). To give you a quick peek of the event, here’s a video!
