Back To Baguio (With Mama) : Burnham Park

Finally, here’s to conclude my Back To Baguio (With Mama) travel series. We ended up our whole day tour by exploring the so called “mother of all parks” in Baguio, the Burnham Park! It’s like Baguio’s counterpart of Luneta of Manila. It was designed and named after Daniel Hudson Burnham. It is generally a very huge park with an overwhelming amount of attractions to visit.
20161218_160354tMy mom and I were actually very tired and exhausted after all that trips we had so we didn’t get the chance to explore the place in full extent but we were able to embrace the beauty of this park and those wonderful scenery.
20161218_155522tBurnham Park covers a huge 32.84 hectares of land which is composed of 12 cluster areas including the Burnham Lagoon, Children Playground, a Skating Rink, Rose Garden, Orchidarium, Igorot Garden, Melvin Jones Grandstand, Baguio Athletic Bowl, Picnic Grove, Japanese Peace Tower, Pine Trees of the World and Sunshine Park. The park is just few walks away from other notable landmarks and restaurants like the Baguio Cathedral, Cafe By The Ruins, and the Baguio City Market.

“Burnham Lagoon”
One of the most popular areas in Burnham park is this man-made lake situtated at the heart of the this huge park. It is the center attractions in Baguio where tourists can actually rent those row boats with interesting shapes and designs. There are swans and other boats that are merely inspired from fairytale and cartoon characters. A boat ride (pedal or row) will cost you Php150 per hour /Php100 for 30 mins and if you know how to operate the boat and you don’t need a rower to guide you, you can actually rent the boat for unlimited time for Php250
20161218_153407t20161218_152921t20161218_152151tThis was actually my first time to see a great amount of willow trees in one place.

“Children Playground”
Not too far from the lagoon is another crowded area, the Children Playground. Here, visitors can rent bikes and scooters. Bike rental will cost you Php40 per hour for BMX and Mountain Bike while Go Kart and Sidecars can be rented for Php50 per hour

20161218_160553Well we didn’t get the chance to explore the other areas in Burnham Park but there’s always a next time right? Generally, my mom and I enjoyed our day tour Baguio trip and I promised to bring her back in this place but in DIY tour and a much longer stay!

How to Get to the Wright Park and The Mansion
►Going to Baguio has never a hassle anymore. There are so many transit buses in the Metro that will take you directly to Baguio (Victory Liner and Genesis buses are two of the common bus companies that offers buses bound to the Summer capital of the Philippines. ►You can take jeepneys bound to this park. From there, you will find different terminals that can actually take you to different Baguio destinations

Where to stay in Baguio
► There are many places to stay while in Baguio. There are many transient houses, budget hotels and even a bedspace. Six Valuable Lessons That “The Greatest Love” Taught Us

While everyone is being swallowed by Kdrama, my mom is being absorbed by one particular afternoon drama, The Greatest Love….and yes, i have to admit I never imagine myself to be addicted with drama until I have watched this show. The Greatest Love is a family drama that follows the story of Gloria, a loving and caring mother of four who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. Her struggle doesn’t just end there because she also had to face some family issues which only worsen her condition.

While most dramas are taking their stories in an exaggerated manner or treating us with their cheesy love stories, The Greatest Love took us in reality. It is not a fairy tale where fantasy comes real, it is a reflection of what is really happening in our society, in our very own family. It features issues that a typical family is dealing with, jealousy among siblings, children changing priorities as they grow up, a mother trying to please her kids just to get their attention back! All of these are happening in real life which makes this drama relatable to viewers of all walks of life.

Now that we only have less than a month left before the series ends, a lot of things are going on and every episodes is getting more and more exciting as it gets a lot more unpredictable. Ever since the show was aired, it taught us so many great lessons in life and allow me to list them down.

The show taught us that….

Pride and Ego will bring you nowhere…
There is a cliche stating that when your pride is bigger than your heart and your Ego is bigger than your head, grow up and you will be alone for life. The character of Amanda (played by Dimples Romana) is more of an epitome of a person full of pride and ego. Being the eldest of the four, she feels like she has this kind of reputation to keep and she has the authority to mandate or to decide on whatever family related issues they are dealing with. Unfortunately for Amanda her mind was corrupted by the thoughts that her mom was treating them unfairly and she didn’t pay any respect to her late dad. Her jealousy, her useless pride, her grudge and her thirst for her mother’s affection lead to an anger which only put her relationship to her mother and her siblings in jeopardy.

Acceptance is the Key Towards Peace of Mind
Sometimes reality could be really painful and if you take it in a wrong way, you can never achieve the peace of mind. Again, this lesson comes from Amanda and how she accepted the fact that her mom tries to abort her (but decided to save her) and her dad actually raped her mom and decided to marry him despite the fact that she still loves Peter. What Amanda did is such a brave thing that not all of us can do. She swallowed her pride and ask for her mom’s forgiveness. Acceptance is indeed a key towards peace of mind and forgiveness. It means that you accepted everything , embraced the reality and knowing that there is bigger than you at work. We are sometimes dealing with bigger challenges and there were moments that these trials are just too big for us to endure. Sometimes our fate is taking us on a path we don’t want to go but we have to embrace the fact that God has plans for us and will take us somewhere beyond expectations. Sometimes we just have to lift our hands and follow the flow and let Him do the job!

Time heals Everything
Conflicts is a normal thing to be encountered in every family but you know what, time has a wonderful way of showing us what really matters. There could have been a huge gap between you and your siblings and it might take longer as expected but you’ll see…. time will come that you are ready enough to forgive, that you are ready enough to move on and you are prepared enough for whatever awaits you. In the case of Gloria and her family, it took a long time before things went back to place. Unfortunately, Gloria had to be ill before her kids realized the issue they are actually dealing with. It’s so unfortunate that Gloria finally had a chance to experience the happiness she has been longing for but it is too late for her to embrace everything because of her condition.

Forgiveness is the Greatest And Final Form of Love
We are just humans and we are not perfect, we all commit mistakes so who are we not to forgive others who have done something wrong to us! Okay, that’s just me trying to be a great adviser but in reality, forgiveness has never been an easy thing.  Sometimes it takes a long process to put things right and to convince yourself that you are ready enough to forget whatever they have done to you. However, we have to keep in mind that no matter how hard it is to forgive someone, it has never been impossible. Forgiving is indeed the greatest form of love because if you forgive someone, you accept everything wholeheartedly. This may no longer change the past but it will certainly change your future and this show taught us how wonderful it feels like when you take all the hatred away and let the love prevails.

Mother’s Love is Always Unconditional
The love that a mother can offer for her kids is  incomparable. They are unconditional that no matter what kind of circumstances comes in, her affection towards her kids will never fade. Like what Agatha Khristie said ” A mother’s love for her child is like nothing else in the world.  It knows no law, no pity, it dares all things, and crushes down remorselessly all that stands in its path“. To make it short, mother wants nothing for her kids than good. She is willing to do all the sacrifices just to make our lives better. She is more than willing to do everything just to keep us safe even the fact that not all of us can bring the courtesy back to her. She is willing to give all her support even though it means that nothing will be left for her. She is willing to offer all her time even the fact that not all of us is even cared of giving it back. She will not ask for anything but deep inside, all she wants is our time and our love. I really love my mom and this show made me realized a lot of things. Am i doing enough to bring back all the love she offered to me? This show made me more expressive about my feelings and if i need to tell my mom that I love her everyday, i would’t mind doing so because she deserves it! She deserves our time, she deserves our respect, she deserves our love.

It’s Not Wrong to Ask God.. Why?
For someone like Gloria who never done anything worst to her kids and her life, don’t you think it is unfair for her to suffer that way? Why this kind of disease needs to consume all the greatest memories she has if that’s the best thing she can only treasure? Why is that when she finally gets what she wants, things will be taken away from her due to such incurable illness? Life for many can be very playful and ironic. Sometimes our fate will put us to something we cannot escape and we just have to accept that whatever awaits us. A priest once told me that sometimes, it is not wrong to ask God why.  God is working His ways and He has plans for us so when you find yourself in a seemingly inescapable situation, just pray and ask for his help because this has always been part of His better plans. Gloria might need a miracle to be cured but her possible death could lead to something better. It could possibly lead a stronger relationship between Amanda and her siblings or even something better! It is a sad tale indeed but let us all look to a better picture shall we?

[Movie Review] Ghost In The Shell : A Satisfying Justice To An Iconic Anime Movie

When it was announced that Ghost in The Shell will have its Live Action treatment with Scarlett Johansson playing the main character, the film received a lot of negative responses particularly about the whitewashing issue. They said that the character should be played by a Japanese actress and they even filed petitions to change the cast but none of them pushed through. These issues actually put the anticipation over the 2017 Live Action film into a higher level. Everyone was so intrigued on how this film will give justice to a classic 1995 Anime movie (both based on a successful Manga series of the same name).

The anticipation is over as Ghost In The Shell finally hits the cinema since yesterday (March 29, 2017) but the question is how this film weighs in? You know, it is very rare opportunity to see an anime being adapted into a Live Action which is also catered for American audiences. As an anime fan, I was honestly thrilled to watch this movie despite of the negative responses prior to its release. I actually thought that this film will be disappointing but hey, guess what, Ghost in the Shell is surprisingly good and probably one of the best live action anime I have seen so far.ghostinshell0002Photo Credit : Paramount Pictures

The movie remained faithful to its origin but they notably added some changes with the plot as they decided to explore deeper on the backstory of Major (Matoko Kusanagi – played by Scarlett Johansson). The film follows a story of Major, the first successful cyber-enhanced human and leader of the crime-fighting force Section 9. Despite being a machine, Major is still a human by soul. Shell is a term used for her mechanic body but the Ghost is the human spirit lying underneath.  She was merely used as a weapon but she still has old memories in her mind that constantly haunts her from time to time.

Her skills and knowledge were put on a test when a series of terrorist attacks occurred. In this modern world where human beings can be implanted with cybernetic enhancements allowing them to do things beyond limitations, hacking has become a serious threat and their enemies are using such advantage to terrorize and control people’s mind. The Major, however , faced her ultimate challenge ~herself! Her corrupted memory consumes her and she started to doubt her own existence. She was make to believe that she was saved but things ave changed when she discovers the cruel reality behind her past.

Interesting plot with deeper Backstory and New Characters
The story is surprisingly compelling. I love the fact that they remained faithful to the original plot while taking us to a new realm at the same time. If you watched the 1995 Anime movie, you will be taken to a very confusing universe and there’s just too many things to catch up especially for those who haven’t read the manga. For a franchise that expanded for two decades, putting them all in a movie would be a challenge but the 2017 Ghost in the Shell version managed to capture all the important details while adding interesting elements in between. I personally like when they added a story on how “Batou” (played by Pilou Asbæk) obtained his robotic implant eyes.  Hideo Kuze (played by Michael Pitt) is also an interesting addition to the movie. The character was actually not part of the 1995 Anime movie but the animated series (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) with a story that is not really different on how he was depicted in this movie. Togusa‘s role (played by Chin Han) , however, has become less prominent in this movie.

Scarlett and The Major Are Truly Meant For Each Other
Did you know that the role of Major (Matoko Kusanagi) was also offered to Margot Robbie? Yes but she was casted as Harley Quinn. The role fell to Scarlett Johansson which is actually a perfect choice to portray the role. Major is known for being one badass cyborg and is notable for her very strong personality and somehow lifeless persona. Scarlett managed to bring the character into life and gave justice to this iconic role.  Although I cannot help but to see Natasha Romanoff in some of her action scenes especially those part where she is riding a motorcycle. I actually don’t think that this kind of role is a challenge for Johansson because she already portrayed heroine in some of her movies including the 2014 film Lucy. It is a perfect role indeed and same thing goes with other casts especially Batou (Pilou Asbæk) who is actually known for being kind hearted and has huge sense of humor despite of his masuclar physique.

Holograms Everywhere
The movie is set on a futuristic environment. If you have watched the anime, you’ll know that even the garbage trucks are equipped with modern technology. In this film, we were taken to a colorful yet highly innovative atmosphere. Although I appreciate their visions on how the future looks like but I think they used the holograms exaggeratedly. The holograms were almost everywhere and some are as big as the skycrappers (even the sponsors haha). Holograms are truly fascinating but if the future will be like this, I don’t think I can bear such haha (some are even scary). Ghost in The Shell 1995 Movie is considered as one of the best anime films of all time and was praised due to its impressive visuals so it is understandable that this film will exert effort to reach the viewers’ expectations. The CGI animation for the 2017 live action version of Ghost In The Shell is fairly decent. There are best and worst parts but it is generally impressive.

Amazing Recreated Scenes From Anime
It’s not everyday to see a Live Action movie that is merely inspired from an Anime and if it happens, one thing that anime fans will look forward to is how the scenes from anime will be recreated in a live action. I’m telling you now that some of the film’s best moments are those scenes that are recreated from the original anime movie. This is the reason why i highly suggest that you must rewatch the anime movie before watching this film so you can set a comparison and you can tell how they give justice to some of the film’s iconic moments. The opening scene, the yacht and diving scene, the battle sequences between the spider robot and The Major, and how Major uses her Thermoptic suit that allows her to become invisible.GHOST IN THE SHELL - Layout 5Photo Credit : Paramount Pictures

Overall, it was a decent adaptation of the Anime (or the manga). People who are not aware of the Anime source material may still find this film enjoying without the need of looking back to its previous animated movies but it could be more enjoying if they do so.  Scarelett Johansson is a perfect actress to play such role. Much like the Anime movie, it concludes with many hanging questions and mysteries waiting to be explored so this film could possibly expand to another sequel but I don’t think it’s going to happen anytime soon. (I’m actually more excited to see another anime to be adapted in another live action film…. Cowboy Bebop anyone?

My rating for this movie is 4 out of 5

Ghost in the Shell is now showing in 2D, 3D and IMAX starting March 29, 2017!
